(aka - “Jaljeera” - Hydrating Elixir)
An Ancient Rehydrating Ayurveda Electrolyte Recipe!
Electrolyte imbalances are the cause of more modern health problems than we realize. The number one way we get out electrolytes every day is thru the water we drink. However, most of us drink water devoid of electrolytes due to reverse osmosis water filters.
The 5 key electrolytes your body needs include:
1. magnesium
2. calcium
3. sodium
4. potassium
5. chloride
Your electrolytes run your electrical system - your nervous system. This includes the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as your cardiac and enteric nervous systems which regulate your heart and gut respectively. Electrolytes also help with nerve signaling, muscle contraction, heart rhythm, blood pressure, fluid volume, anxiety, sleep and digestion amongst other functions.
When electrolytes are out of balance, the nervous system and the various functions and systems it supports can express symptoms which include but are not limited to palpitations, muscle cramps/twitches/spasms, insomnia, gut imbalances, tachycardia, mental health challenges, endocrine & immune imbalances and the list goes on.
This recipe is excellent at restoring your electrolytes and is perfect for summer or anytime you may be sweating a lot making your electrolytes low. Electrolytes also go low due to diarrhea or vomiting - even 1 round of either is enough to knock your electrolytes out of balance. Pittas with chronic loose bowel tendencies can be challenged to maintain proper electrolyte balance which makes a recipe like this one critical for long term health. Other causes of low electrolytes may include flu, chronic illness, POTS, excess physical activity, exercise, sweating, sauna, jacuzzi, overwork and certain illnesses.
INGREDIENTS:
-
Combine
-
2 cups room temp spring water - spring water has natural minerals and electrolytes in it
-
¼ tsp ground roasted cumin seeds - helps with absorption of fluids and nutrients into gut lining and good for loose bowel tendencies (mrdu koshtha) - avoid if constipation tendencies
-
4 leaves fresh mint leaves - enhances digestion, refreshing and sattvic to the mind and mental channels, helps keep channels open, in the spring/winter you can use fresh chopped ginger or sunthi powder instead or in addition to mint
-
2-4 pinches salt (ayurveda mineral salt is preferred - or other mineral salts can be experimented with) - helps your body retain the fluids so you don't just pee them right back out, but help to build your blood volume instead.
-
1 tsp rose petal preserve or 1-2 tsp sucanat, molasses, 1-2 pitted dates or dark brown sugar to taste
-
Juice of ½ lime - natural flavor enhancer, digestive enhancer due to sour and bitter components, natural vitamin C, without increasing your pitta and causing heartburn like using lemons long term can
-
1 capsule Soma Calcium (ayurvedically processed traditional nano-particle calcium supplement - open the capsule up and pour it into the drink)
-
1 capsule of your favorite magnesium of choice (we recommend magnesium glycinate, taurate, L-threonate, or malate or a combo of any of them)
-
Few rose petals - if you have them (enhances vibrational resonance of this drink, promotes sattva and opens the vibrational heart)
-
Blend all together.
